這種情形會出現全內反射

n1*sin∠1=n2*sin∠2 的法則是為了遷就波在不同媒介下速率的不同，原因是波的某些部分會先到達媒介邊界，而其他部分則比較遲。為了在同一媒介保持相同速率的同時也維持波脈衝一致，波就會按比例折射，形成。如果n2大於n1，則∠1大於∠2。

可是sin函數最大值只有1，因此若果波是從媒介2行進到媒介1，則有可能沒有相應的折射角，此時就會出現全內反射，即波的全部會在邊界反射回媒介2。如果波可以剛好折射到媒介1(即折射角為90度)，該入射角就稱為臨界角。這就是允許波折射的最大入射角。
