On February 20, 1988, I read a job advertisement in the China Times. The position was for a job in an African country(that I had never heard of before, Bophuthatswana). Being a curious person, I made inquires and soon landed in the middle of one of the greatest adventures of my life.
While I was on the plane, a picture of wild Africa came to my mind. I imagined myself living in the jungle, having a lion cub for a pet, riding to and from school on an elephant, and wearing traditional tribal jewelry though my nose). After eighteen hours of flying, I arrived at the airport in Johannes burg, the biggest city in South Africa. I was met and welcomed not by an African chief with a painted face but by the Minister of Education dressed in a business suit and tie. A little while later, I got on a plane again for a short domestic flight to the small township where I would be working.
when I landed at the airport in Blofountain, I was picked up by the superintendent of the local school district. He put my luggage in the combi, opened the passenger door on the left hand side of the vehicle, and helped me in. He then politely told me (we would reach my new home in about an hour).
We drove through stretches of arid land and arrived in Thabanchu, a black township surrounded by South African cities. I was told(that the local people of Thabanchu were not allowed to go outside this area after dark). I began to get nervous. I had never thought(that apartheid would have anything to do with me). I felt isolated right away because I realized(that I was in a town separated by more than land from the rest of South Africa).
